Platinum Uses in Medicine

Platinum is widely used in health care. Sources include:

  • Cytostatic medications such as Cisplatin and Carboplatin
  • Catheters
  • Cardiac implants. Coronary stents, heart valve splices, and pacemaker components are all made with platinum
  • Neuromodulation devices

Platinum-containing cytostatic medications like Cisplatin are applied intravenously. The active substance spreads throughout the body and also crosses the blood-brain barrier. It accumulates especially in the kidneys, liver, intestines and testicles. The cytostatic agent and its metabolic products are excreted mainly in the urine, and to a small extent with bile, i.e. with the stool.

Data from Micro Trace Minerals suggests that hair reflects on past exposure to platinum-containing cytostatica.

Platinum in modern medicine

The precious metal platinum is used medically for implants, pacemakers and as an alloy additive in dental materials. Platinum wires are sometimes used to treat cerebral aneurysms.
Platinum complexes such as cisplatin are used as cytostatics in cancer therapy and play a key role in the treatment of various types of cancer, e.g:

  • Ovarian carcinoma (ovarian cancer)
  • Testicular carcinoma (testicular cancer)
  • Bladder carcinoma (bladder cancer)
  • Lung cancer, both small cell and non-small cell
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Cervical carcinoma (cancer of the cervix)
